Founded in 2023 by Lauretta Mtike, The Flow Project addresses a critical gap in sexual health education and access to sanitary pads for young girls in tourist areas of Malawi. Many of these girls are overlooked by mainstream NGOs, despite their urgent needs. Instead of benefiting from local tourism, they often face risks like engaging in risky sexual behavior or falling into prostitution.
The initiative began with inspiration from a local football tournament organized by a family close to Lauretta, which brought girls together in a positive environment. From there, The Flow Project blossomed, focusing on sports, creative arts, and educational workshops to empower girls with essential knowledge on sexual health and emphasize the importance of education. This holistic approach also provides them with constructive hobbies and extracurricular activities.
Achievements:
Since its inception, The Flow Project has successfully hosted three tournaments and reached over 800 girls in Cape and Mangochi. Alongside the tournaments, educational talks, and workshops, the project includes a program distributing reusable sanitary pads, ensuring that girls have access to essential hygiene products. Impressively, The Flow Project has maintained an 84% participation rate among girls, countering common challenges such as early marriage and health issues that typically hinder their involvement in such initiatives.
Future Plans:
Looking ahead, The Flow Project aims to expand its impact by teaching girls how to create their own sanitary pads. Additionally, the initiative plans to extend its reach to smaller tourist towns across Malawi, starting with Nchalo, Nkhatabay, and Salima. By spreading its message and resources, The Flow Project seeks to empower more girls and communities with the tools they need for a healthier and more secure future.
Join us as we continue to support and uplift girls through education, creativity, and empowerment at The Flow Project. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of young women in Malawi.
